Understanding the lay of the land, navigating it, and getting around more effectively: the Cassini map of France marked a major milestone in the understanding of the country. In the 18th century, the Cassini map provided a pioneering answer to these needs by becoming the first topographic and geometric map of France covering the entire national territory. This approach naturally resonates with Michelin’s own historic expertise, as the company’s mission has always been to help people get around better. Presented by the National Archives, the exhibition “The Cassini Map of France: An Encyclopedia of the Territory” highlights this major heritage asset, the expertise that made its creation possible, and the skills that ensure its preservation and transmission to future generations today. In the lead-up to the exhibition, the Michelin Corporate Foundation supported the vital behind-the-scenes work that harnessed scientific, technical, and digital expertise to preserve the integrity of the maps and make them easier to interpret. We are delighted to help showcase this precious, inspiring legacy today and to make it accessible to the widest possible audience.
