The Comédie-Française, an extraordinary institution for all audiences

Comédie-Française

Since its founding in 1680, the Comédie-Française has never ceased to surprise and establish itself as a thriving and creative “show factory”.

It bases its exception, its sustainability and its vitality on 3 pillars:

The Troupe, members and residents have followed one another since Molière’s companions with today 60 permanent actors.

The Repertoire, an incomparable foundation of literature and history of our French and foreign societies, is enriched each year with new and most varied theatrical writings. Today it has more than 3,000 works.

Alternation, a practice that only the Comédie-Française has continued in France, going so far as to program 8 concurrent plays on its 3 stages.

The leading theater in France must make live performance accessible to everyone, schools and families, but also to audiences who are particularly far away (physically, socially or geographically). Cultural practice helps create and enrich social bonds by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds for a moment of sharing.

In 2023 and 2024, thanks to the support of the Michelin Corporate Foundation in particular, and partner associations, the accessibility teams of the Comédie-Française have developed actions aimed at audiences with disabilities, who are sometimes also in a situation of exclusion and precariousness.

New devices could thus be put in place:

  • Tactile tours to introduce blind and visually impaired people to the theater and its history by giving them the opportunity to individually manipulate tactile models.
  • Audio description headsets are available for certain performances at the Salle Richelieu and the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, as well as programs in Braille and enlarged characters.

Furthermore, since March 2024, connected glasses have been available on demand for all performances at the Salle Richelieu, offering subtitling in sign language for the deaf and hard of hearing, but also in English, French and adapted French.

Each year:

  • 2,500 spectators from the social field come to discover the Comédie-Française in groups
  • 900 people with disabilities are welcomed within the framework of dedicated devices
