On 10th October 2017, Mr. Jean-Dominique Senard, Chief Executive Officer of the Michelin Group & President of the Executive Board of the Michelin Corporate Foundation and, H.E. Mr. Alexandre Ziegler, Ambassador of France to India dedicated a Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) to the communities around the Michelin plant near Chennai.
The Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) will be attended by a crew of Doctor, Nurse and Community health workers. It will provide basic diagnostic services and treatment to patients with acute and chronic diseases. This unit is equipped to screen patients for a range of diseases including hypertension, diabetes and anaemia. This Mobile Medical Unit will cover all thirty-one villages around the Michelin India plant in Thiruvallur District in Tamil Nadu and complements Michelin’s Community Health care program as part of its CSR initiatives.
Managed by The Foundation for Rural Recovery and Development (FORRAD) and funded by Michelin Corporate Foundation, the MMU will operate from Monday to Saturday and will stop at each of the 12 designated stops for an entire day, twice a month. Each stop will cater to patients of the surrounding villages, providing healthcare access to 30,000 people.
The Foundation for Rural Recovery and Development (FORRAD) was established in January 1980. Since its inception, its objective has been to promote, support, and coordinate projects that relate to the development of human and natural resources. It presently works in the areas of natural resource management, health, agriculture and education. FORRAD pays attention to details that are often overlooked in development work. Equal opportunities between genders, castes and communities; and equal pay for equal work. The organisation aims to ensure that control over resources and technologies is vested with rural communities. Although centred on natural resources and health care, FORRAD’s work intersects with issues of social justice, empowerment and employment generation. FORRAD currently works in Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
