Restoring a biodiversity corridor in Guinea

Climate Chance

“The ecological corridor is more than a protected area: it is a promise of coherence between local development, conservation and climate, and a model that can be replicated across the continent.” Climate Chance

In northern Guinea, Climate Chance is piloting a pioneering biodiversity conservation initiative: the creation of a 62,000-hectare ecological corridor linking two national parks. This buffer zone aims to halt habitat fragmentation, which is essential to the survival of many species, including chimpanzees, which are threatened by agricultural pressure and mining projects.

With the support of its partners, the association is developing a replicable methodology, combining territorial planning, participatory governance, and innovative financing. Climate-biodiversity certification is at the heart of the scheme: it will generate carbon credits incorporating environmental, social, and economic co-benefits, ensuring a sustainable financing model for local communities.

The project also includes a capacity-building component, with the training of 400 local stakeholders in environmental management, carbon certification, and shared governance models. In parallel, a technical unit will be established at the Guinean government level to support the development of national skills.

This approach is part of a long-term dynamic, aiming at placing ecological connectivity at the heart of Guinean conservation policies, while providing concrete benefits to the populations committed to protecting their territory. The Michelin Corporate Foundation supports this approach focused on innovation and sustainability.

Key figures

  • 8,000 hectares restored and protected in the corridor in 18 months
  • 10,000 carbon credits generated with co-benefits for biodiversity
  • 400 people trained in climate, biodiversity, and governance issues
